How do overusing smartphones damage our health?

In today’s globalized world, it is almost impossible to imagine a day without mobile phones. And definitely, it is one of the most victorious inventions of the 20th century, which has become a convenient means of communication. Modern mobile phones perform many other functions besides phone calls like they can substitute for music players, cameras, and organizers. Most of them also provide Internet access and texting. You may capture your moment any time and can share it with your friends within a few seconds.

That’s why they use of smartphones is increasing day by day considerably and widely by all ages of people, but if we see the percentage, teenagers and young ages are the most common users of smartphones. And you will be astonished to hear that according to the U.N. Telecom agency, there were almost 6 billion cell phone users in the world, with almost 86 gadgets for every 100 people. The average adult spending 8 hours and 41 minutes on digital devices each day. And According to Pew Research Center, 78% of teens aged between 12 and 17 have mobile phones. Believe it or not, one in four teens has access to the Internet, far more than adults. So, is a cell phone a good thing for teens?

So, let’s talk about the health effect of using smartphones extensively:


Brain health Vs smartphones:

Radiological Society of North America, researchers found that young people with a so-called internet and smartphone addiction demonstrated imbalances in brain chemistry compared to a control group.

Association for Consumer Research found that cognitive capacity was significantly reduced whenever a smartphone is within reach, even when the phone is off.

Smartphones don't necessarily turn people from deep thinkers into lazy thinkers, but the research does suggest that people who are naturally intuitive thinkers—or those who act based on instinct and emotions—tend to rely on their phones more frequently.

And there’s lot more research has already been conducted and still, some research is going on, most of the research demonstrating the downside of using extensively mobile phone and it impedes our brain and makes it lazier.


Sleeping time vs Smartphones:


Do you ever think about the association between smartphones and sleep? Maybe no or yes! But interestingly there’s a great association between smartphones and the sleeping time of individuals.

Let’s see the scientific explanation-

Smartphones, tablets, and laptops all emit bright blue light which keeping you up at night by suppressing your brain’s production of melatonin, a hormone that helps with sleep timing and circadian rhythms.

Although blue light isn’t new, in nature, it is most abundant in the morning help to wake up and be alert. When you use smartphones and other blue-light-emitting technology, like laptops or tablets, right before bed, your body’s cues to go to sleep are delayed. The research found that using a mobile screen ≥8 hours/24 hours, using the mobile for at least 30 minutes before sleeping after the lights have been turned off, and keeping the mobile near the pillow are positively associated with poor sleep quality.

Research also found that even Keeping the mobile near the pillow while sleeping” positively correlates with daytime sleepiness, sleep disturbances, and increased sleep latency.


Eyesight vs Smartphones:



Do you believe damaging you are ruining your eyes day by day by extensively using your smartphones? Yes! You are the worst sufferer and you can’t imagine how does it happening.

It’s predicted that by 2040, 288 million people will be affected. As blue light destroys the eye’s photoreceptor cells and therefore hinders central vision.

Researchers at the University of Toledo, in Ohio, have found that exposure to blue light that is emitted from most smartphones, tablets, and laptops promotes the growth of “poisonous molecules” in your eyes, leading to macular degeneration. And macular degeneration ultimately leads to blindness.
